What is ETIAS?

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a pre-travel authorisation for visitors who don't need a visa for Europe. It's the EU's version of America's ESTA: a short online form, not a visa, and not a change to your visa-free status.

Who needs one

Citizens of the 60 or so visa-exempt countries — including New Zealand, Australia, the UK, the US, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico — travelling to the Schengen area for short stays. If you currently need a visa for Europe, ETIAS doesn't apply to you; the visa process does.

How it works

Once the portal opens (Q4 2026), you fill in an online application — passport details, background questions — and pay the €20 fee to the EU. Most decisions are expected within minutes; a minority go to manual review, which can take up to 30 days, so applying well before travel is the published advice. An approval is electronically linked to your passport: nothing to print, valid three years, multiple trips.

What ETIAS is not

• Not a visa — it doesn't change how long you can stay or what you can do.
• Not live yet — nobody can apply until the EU opens the portal in Q4 2026.
• Not a guarantee of entry — border officers make the final call, as they do today.
