Yes — UK citizens will need an ETIAS for short stays in the Schengen area once it becomes mandatory around April 2027. And no — there is nothing to do today: the application portal doesn't open until Q4 2026, and until the mandatory date you travel exactly as you do now.

What this means for British passport holders

This is a post-Brexit change: British passport holders are now visa-exempt third-country nationals, which is exactly who ETIAS covers. It applies to trips to the Schengen area — travel to Ireland is not affected.

• Nothing to apply for yet. The portal opens in Q4 2026. Anyone charging UK citizens for an ETIAS today is selling a document that doesn't exist.
• One useful check now: the published rule requires your passport to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure from Europe. If your British passport expires within 18 months, renewing it is slower than an ETIAS will be.
• When it opens: the application is a short online form, €20 to the EU (free under 18 / over 70), most decisions within minutes, valid 3 years of multiple trips.
