ETIAS for Americans

Yes, you'll need one — but not yet, and not from anyone charging you today. Here's the honest version for US passport holders.

The short answer

Yes — Americans will need an ETIAS for short stays in the Schengen area once it becomes mandatory around April 2027. And no — there is nothing to do today: the application portal doesn't open until Q4 2026, and until the mandatory date you travel exactly as you do now.

What this means for US passport holders

If you've dealt with ESTA for visitors to the US, ETIAS is the same idea pointed the other way: an online pre-authorisation, not a visa. Visa-free access to Europe continues — with one new step in front of it.

• Nothing to apply for yet. The portal opens in Q4 2026. Anyone charging Americans for an ETIAS today is selling a document that doesn't exist.
• One useful check now: the published rule requires your passport to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure from Europe. If your US passport expires within 18 months, renewing it is slower than an ETIAS will be.
• When it opens: the application is a short online form, €20 to the EU (free under 18 / over 70), most decisions within minutes, valid 3 years of multiple trips.
